The flush is a great position to play from because it is a strong hand. A flush can beat any straight, trips, two pairs, one pair, and high card combination that are possible. Its only weaknesses are full houses, four of a kind, straight flush, and royal flush, however, the chances that a player will be able to make these card combinations are slim, so it is important to take advantage of the flush when it appears.
The first thing that a player should do when hitting the flush is to quickly determine if there is any way that another player could use the community cards to build a better hand. If there really isn’t a chance for building a better hand with the flop the player should then take into consideration the amount of chips they have. If they have a short stack they may want to take this opportunity to go all in and double up their chips. If they have a big stack they may use the flush to force a short stack into an all in situation so that they can be eliminated from the tournament.
If the flush is not completed on the flop the player may want to limp into the flop betting round, just in case the cards they need aren’t revealed on the turn or river. If they are low on chips they should also take into consideration the strength of their hand if the cards aren’t there. They should have another hand possible before betting further, at least a pair, preferably top pair. If their hand is worthless they probably shouldn’t take the risk. If they do have a decent hand even without the flush draw, they should make a big move at the flop if there are still a lot of players left in the hand. This will help to eliminate other players who may be able to draw a stronger hand on the turn and river, and it will increase the amount of chips invested by the players who stay in the hand. Either way a strong move will help the final position of the player with the possible flush draw.
If the cards for a flush are revealed on the flop a player with a less than perfect hand and position may want to take the opportunity to bluff their way to claiming the pot. If the early position players have not made a move for the pot, a player in late position may want to make a strong move to create the illusion that they have the flush, even though they don’t have those cards. This move will probably get most of the other players to fold.
