Poker Basics and Poker Games

Poker has become popular worldwide with all ages and all sections of the society playing it. Poker is simple to understand but requires both luck and skill. You have to know the basics and points of poker etiquettes to play the game well.

Poker has become world famous due to the televised championships and celebrity poker game shows. Many variations on the original poker game have developed over the years.
Following are some variations of poker.

1) Texas Hold’em - a very popular version.

2) Omaha Hold’em - A community card game similar to Texas Hold’em. In this variation the Omaha players get four personal cards and share five community cards.

3) Pineapple Hold’em - also known as Crazy Pineapple. It is halfway between Texas Hold’em and Omaha.

4) Draw Poker - is the most basic of all poker games with ‘Five Card Draw’ being very popular.

5) Stud Poker - has many variations. The most popular version played in casinos is the ‘Seven Card Stud’.

6) Badugi - is a four card lowball/triple draw variant where the goal is to end up with four cards of different suits and different ranks.

7) Lowball - is a five card draw where the lowest hand wins (straights or flushes not counting).

8) Razz - is a Seven Card Stud lowball.

The basic hands in the various poker games are about the same, with minor variations. The basic poker hands range from high/low card to a royal flush. Low cards are any 5 combination of Ace to 7 or 8 (with no pair(s) or flush), high card is the player that has the highest card with Ace being the highest.

There are many different types of poker and each has specific rules. The basic rules of any poker game start with either ante or two/five cards dealt to each player. The object of most poker games is to get the highest or lowest hand possible.

In high/low poker games, the general poker rule is the person with the highest and the lowest hand split the pot. In normal poker games, the player with the highest cards wins the pot. Whether you be playing with community cards or exchanging cards with dealer, most poker games allows players to bet, call, check, fold, or raise each round.
